CPL now accredited to Woodsure Ready to Burn scheme

CPL Industries is now a fully accredited member of the Woodsure Ready to Burn scheme.

The Ready to Burn scheme, which is backed by Defra and HETAS, identifies firewood suppliers such as CPL who can demonstrate to Woodsure that their logs have a moisture content of below 20%.

Fuel manufacturers and suppliers signing up to the scheme will be able to use the Ready to Burn logo on packaging and literature providing they evidence through auditing that their legally sourced fuel is below 20% moisture content.

Wood fuel suppliers will be able to use the brand and point of sale information and must commit to an ongoing programme of testing and auditing to show continued improvement.

Ready to Burn will help consumers differentiate between the brands in the market and help educate stove users on the benefits of using dry wood.

Research carried out by CPL in 2016 shows that while consumers in general do understand the need for dry wood, the market in general is still largely unregulated. 24% got their wood for free and more than 50% buy from a local firewood merchant.

Speaking at the official launch event in October, CPL Sales Director Julian Martin said: “Ready to Burn offers a number of consumer benefits including simplified purchase decision, increased heating efficiency and less appliance maintenance. For society, this means less smoke emissions leading to improved health and better air quality, and from a supply chain point of view it means we can offer value added products, with assured quality while meeting our aims for corporate and social responsibility.

“Ready to Burn is a voluntary scheme and as suppliers we must encourage retailers to adopt it and need to convince them of the social and commercial opportunities for supporting the scheme.”

Woodsure Director Bruce Allen added: “Today, modern heating appliances are highly engineered, efficient pieces of technology that do a fantastic job – but they can only do so much without quality wood fuel.

“Think about it, if you bought a super clean energy-efficient car, would you choose to fill it up with a fuel you were unsure of? It’s true that modern heating appliances are not as complex as car engines, but the same principles apply. Poor quality wood fuel leads to smoke and a poor fuel economy.”

The Ready to Burn scheme is designed to promote the burning of dry firewood and is backed by government department DEFRA, stove manufacturers and firewood suppliers including CPL.
